Drinks and polarized light microscopy

JapaneseSlipper1

We needed a few drops of some different solutions that would give nice crystals to explore with a DIY microscope constructed following the guide in our free eBook ‘How to build a digital microscope: construct a reliable, inexpensive microscope for both regular and polarized light microscopy’, so we threw a drinks party and scavenged a drop here and there from the empty glasses. The drops were put on glass slides, and crystallized at 45C until completely dry.

The microscope was capable of x300 magnification, but the focusing stage was a tad shoddy (thanks in part to the festivities), so the focus was a bit off, and we’ve cropped the edges of the images to clean them up a bit.
